Victoria McDowell Bess finished her earthly duties on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, and was called to Heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her last two years had been spent at the Kings Mountain Care Center (Debbie and Archie Crocker) and Peak Resources of Gastonia, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Ernest McDowell and Mattie Bell McDowell.
She was preceded in death by her husband John L. Bess, Sr., sons John L. Bess, Jr. and Brian Deforrest Bess; sisters Ruth Bess, Helen Carver, and Adeline Ellis; brothers James McDowell, William McDowell, and George McDowell.
Mrs. Victoria Bess was a lifelong member of Long Branch Baptist Church of Grover, N.C. She attended faithfully until her health declined, but never lost her zest for the Lord or her love for her family or community.
Victoria leaves to cherish her memories a son, Charles Bess (Shirley) of Monroe, N.C.; and a daughter, Gale Bess of Gastonia, N.C.; grandsons, Natavian Gill of Gastonia, N.C. and Shaun Grier, Sr. of Kings Mountain, N.C.; great- granddaughters, Tabatha Manning of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Keja McCoy of Calera, Ala.; great-grandsons, Shaun Grier, Jr. of Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi, and Jaden Grier of Kings Mountain, N.C.; sisters, Betty Bell (Army) of Woodbridge, Va., and Joyce Jeffries of Kings Mountain, N.C.; many nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and special family friend Ray Raynor.
Homegoing services for Victoria were held on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Long Branch First Baptist Church in Grover.
Burial was at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain, N.C.
